India's Reliance Commissions Pet and Pta Is Set up in Gujarat State

India’s Reliance Industries (RIL) will be commissioning a Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) plant and a Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) resin plant at Dahej in the western state of Gujarat.

The PET plant that has been built with Invista Technology for Continuous Polymerization and Buhler Technology for solid state polymerization will have two lines with a combined manufacturing capacity of 650 kilo tonnes per annum (KTA).

The company's PTA plant will have a capacity of 1,150 KTA and will increase its total PTA capacity to 3.2 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and global capacity share to 4%, the company said in a statement.

The two feedstock for the new PET plant, Purified Terephthalic Acid (PTA) and Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG), will be made available within the Dahej complex.

The PET resin produced at the plant would find application in packaging for water, carbonated soft drinks, pharmaceuticals and other food and beverages.

"The plant is equipped with state-of-the-art technology for consistent quality and reliable production capability. New capacity addition by Reliance will greatly help the downstream bottle and packaging industry in meeting the increasing demand from India and the region. India is one of the fastest growing markets for PET packaging with demand growing by 15-20% annually," RIL said in a statement.

The company has also integrated the PTA plant with a 650 KTA PET plant in the same complex which RIL says will help in lowering its operating cost and capture full chain margins.

Another PTA plant of similar capacity is currently being built at the same location. Once completed, RIL said that it would figure in the top five PTA producers globally.
