The LED Lighting Industry Has Been Targeting a Price for LED Packaging to Reach 500lm/US$

The LED lighting industry has been targeting a price for LED packaging to reach 500lm/US$ in 2012 and hit the threshold of 1,000lm/US$ in 2015. This target is five years ahead of targets set by the US Department of Energy (DOE), according to industry sources. The LED industry has not been excelling in technology and efficiency in 2011, but market prices have been falling rather rapidly. A price drop for LED products to replace traditional 60W light bulbs was apparent in second-quarter 2011. By September, price dropped 10% in a single quarter. By the end of the year, the price of first-tier brand 800lm LED light bulbs that are to replace traditional 60W bulbs will likely reach below US$25/unit, added industry sources. Taiwan-based LED chipmaker Epistar indicated Taiwan-based firms have a cost advantage over peers and said it expects the penetration rate of LED lighting to reach 25% in 2013.
