Carbon reduction management agent partners with PassivSystems at launch of the UK's largest ever trial of home energy management systems and solar PV.
Climate Energy has today launched SmartHomes2020, the largest trial of home energy management systems and solar PV ever attempted in the UK. SmartHomes2020 will see 5,000 homeowners have the chance to make energy bill savings of between £300 and £500 with the free installation of solar PV panels combined with a unique home energy management system from connected home technology firm, PassivSystems.
SmartHomes2020 is a flagship project of the global Smart Cities Initiative of The Climate Group and aims to provide a thorough understanding of the benefits of renewable energy and everyday energy use, as well as delivering considerable energy savings for the homeowner.
Domestic housing is estimated to contribute 29% of all UK carbon emissions with heating and hot water equating to more than 80% of all energy used in the home. The SmartHomes2020 solution can reduce energy consumption by up to 30% and with estimates that by 2020 the average energy bill per year could be anything up to £4,750, will offer significant savings to beleaguered bill payers.
Andrew Holmes, Managing Director, Climate Energy Ltd said: "SmartHomes2020 provides the ideal opportunity for Local Authorities and Registered Housing Providers to participate in a scheme that will help them commit to meeting their carbon reduction targets and improving the energy efficiency of the social and private housing stock across their boroughs."
SmartHomes2020 sees 4,000 privately-owned homes and 1,000 owned by social landlords get the exclusive opportunity to enjoy one of the most technologically advanced home energy management systems in the market. PassivEnergy helps consumers manage energy use in their homes better. Its smart software and learning algorithms reduce the wasted energy caused by heating homes when unoccupied, by heating more hot water than needed. It manages the boiler and hot water tank more efficiently, taking account of occupant usage habits, the thermal properties of the home and the weather outside. PassivEnergy also monitors solar PV performance on the same platform. Trials have seen the system save its early customers an average of 23% on their energy bills.
PassivSystems consultants have spent years monitoring, evaluating and understanding consumer behaviour and energy consumption. Their partnerships with universities, technology consultants, energy suppliers, white goods and meter manufacturers and government helped shape PassivEnergy, which launched in May 2010 to critical acclaim.
Mark Davies, Chief Operating Officer, PassivSystems Ltd said, "We've looked extensively at how people engage with energy in their home and are excited to be at the heart of such a large-scale and innovative project as SmartHomes2020. It will be fascinating to see how consumers react to having whole home energy management systems in their houses: we believe we will be able to help residents reduce their energy costs significantly, directly addressing fuel poverty at a time when energy bills have reached an all-time high."
The project sees the free installation solar company ISIS Solar and the University College London working closely with the Climate Group, Climate Energy Ltd and Passivsystems. It is hoped that the project will give a greater insight to the use of energy within the home, the benefits of solar panels and of course offering the households a saving on their electricity bills.
