In 2013, the total value of China's external trade for ships amounted to $31.046 billion, down 24.2 percent year on year, according to the Chinese customs authorities. The total value of China's ship exports in the given year amounted to $29.007 billion, down 25.28 percent year on year, constituting the lowest figure in four years, while the country's total ship import value amounted to $2.033 billion, up 14 percent year on year.

In 2013, the total value of China's exports of bulk freighters came to $12.381 billion, while China's exports of oil tankers and container ships totaled $2.738 billion and $3.76 billion in value respectively.

In the year in question, China exported ships to 189 countries or regions. China's ship exports to Asia, Europe and Latin America amounted to $17.822 billion, $3.487 billion and $3.294 billion, down 21.2 percent, 41.8 percent and 32.9 percent respectively, all year on year. In 2013, China imported ships from 49 countries or regions. China's ship imports from Asia and Europe in 2013 amounted to $1.5 billion and $433 million in value respectively.
