The French parliament has voted to ban the use of bisphenol A (BPA) in baby food packaging, a chemical which is suspected to have a toxic effect on the brain and nervous system.
The ban is set to take effect in 2013 for use in packaging for foods for children up to the age of three, while the remaining ban will be implemented for all other food containers in January 2015.
BPA is used in 'polycarbonate' types of hard plastic bottles and also in food and beverage cans as a protective lining.
According to AFP, studies have found a relation between exposure to the hazardous chemical and coronary heart disease as well as reproductive disorders.
The French parliament banned baby bottles that contain BPA in June 2010.
