Indian food regulatory authority Food Standards and Safety Authority of India (FSSAI) would soon ask hotels to initially voluntarily specify the amount of salt and fat in their respective menus.
Hotels would be asked to mention details about significant ingredients like iron, salt and saturated fat content that would be gradually made mandatory.
New norms would be included as part of the Food Safety and Standards (packaging and labeling) regulations, 2011, that would be added by FSSAI, which follows certain claims by energy food companies that seem to be exaggerated.
National Institute of Nutrition director B Sesikaran said the authority will make compulsory for firms to display labels with genuine details on their packages that should match the claims made through advertisements.
A workshop on 'Importance of agricultural technology in India' was held in which affects of genetically modified crops were explained by Sesikaran.
"There is no adverse evidence of ill-effects of GM foods in the countries where they are consumed," said Sesikaran.
