Pressure sensors are employed for measuring the pressure of gases and liquids in general. Pressure is defined as a force per unit area. It means pressure, force and area are deeply interlinked and in case of pressure sensors they are complementary to each other. A pressure sensor works on the patterns of a transducer. A transducer is a device that converts the form of energy. Energy types are electrical, mechanical, light, chemical, acoustic and thermal which can be converted using transducers.
Pressure sensors generate a signal if a pressure is applied on them. In everyday application pressure sensors are used in many controlling and monitoring operation. These are also used for measuring the changes in other variables such as changes in water level, fluid/gas flow and latitude. It has many optional names like pressure transmitters, pressure transducers, pressure indicators and piezometers. These devices differ largely in terms of technology, design and pricing. A rough estimate shows that there might be more than 300 companies dealing in this device and such a sensor is based on at least 50 technologies.
These sensors are also designed in a manner that they can also sense the high speed dynamic changes and can measure the important changes in pressure. There is an example of measuring high speed change. In an engine cylinder or a gas turbine, this type of sensors sense and measure the combustion pressure. Such sensors are manufactured from piezoelectric materials such as quartz. Traffic enforcement cameras also employ this device. In such cameras it works on binary principal. Here the pressure imposed on the pressure sensor complete or break the circuit. In this area they are known as pressure switch. Pressure sensors are of many types and based on their industrial uses they are christened different name. The manufacturing of such a sensor is neither highly sophisticated nor that simple for it demands certain level of expertise.
These devices are in the form of absolute, differential, sealed, vacuum, gauge sensors classified according to their work genre. Pressure sensing technology are of generally two types in which force collector type is much used and employed in its production. These sensors enjoy their wide use. As above stated, it is used in altitude sensing, flow sensing, level/depth sensing, flow sensing, leak sensing etc. we observe that in today’s globalised world order there is a greater demand of these devices than ever. The immense and rapid industrialization in the world has provided the manufacturers with the reason to go fir advanced search in the field of pressure sensing. Now the capital market of the manufacturers in this field is estimated above 3 billion dollars. The general use of pressure sensors makes its use irresistible in everyday life of human beings. Being chiefly an analog device it has alsi created an industry which goes for its maintenance.
