Saparmurat Batyrov, Minister of Textile Industry, Government of Turkmenistan, has submitted a report on the condition of the country’s textile industry to President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, reports en.trend.az.
The report mentions the stages of development of the country’s textile industry and the strengthening of the industry’s production and export potential, the Government said.
President Berdimuhamedov said the country’s textile industry has all opportunities to ensure its competitive position in exports, mainly due to the resolution of key infrastructure, investment and innovational tasks, the statement said.
Turkmenistan is a traditional cotton growing country, and the production of cotton forms the basis for the development of the textile industry, whose annual turnover is pegged at US$ 400 million.
In 2013, Turkmenistan textile industry consisted of 74 companies, including 32 textile complexes, cotton spinning and weaving factories, 17 clothing factories, seven silk enterprises and two wool processing firms.
Since the country became independent in 1991, several textile manufacturing units have been constructed at a cost of $1.6 billion in Turkmenistan, resulting in an increase in cotton fibre processing to 51 percent.
At present, Turkmenistan has an annual production capacity of around 177,000 tons of yarn, 186 million sq m of cotton fabrics, 11,000 tons of knitted fabrics, 7,200 tons of terry fabrics and 80 million pieces of knitwear and garments.
Turkmen textiles are mainly exported to the US, Canada, Russia, Turkey, China, Ukraine, Germany, Italy and the UK.
