The Government of Canada has announced proposed regulatory amendments, which include changes to the Consumer Packaging and Labelling Regulations for iconic icewine.
Under the amendments, the mandatory labeling information on wine bottles and boxes will be displayed in a single field of vision enabling to view the label without having to turn the container.
The proposed amendments are expected to allow wine exporters to have market access without having to redesign their labels for the requirements of each individual country.
As part of the amendments, the mandatory labeling information on the container pertaining to common name, net quantity, country of origin and alcohol content by volume will be retained to ensure that Canadians can make informed decisions.
Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz said the proposed changes will harmonize Canada's definition of icewine with the World Wine Trade Group's Agreement on Requirements for Wine Labelling.
"The proposed regulatory amendments will also benefit exporters by allowing greater market access," Ritz added.
