The new programs offer several new and existing specialty silicones to help formulators meet rising consumer demand for hair care products that counteract the effects of ageing, help express individual style, maintain health and wellbeing, and provide an enjoyable sensory experience. These include such Dow Corning innovations as silicones that outshine anhydrous serums in water-in-oil leave-in conditioners, erase the signs of damage by restoring a healthy look and feel and a new silicone emulsion that imparts moistursing and conditioning benefits without weighing hair down.
“Our new programs illustrate Dow Corning’s extensive understanding of consumer demands and global industry trends for hair care, and how we use this knowledge to collaborate with our customers to give them the advanced silicone ingredients they need to develop next-generation formulations,” said Feifei Lin, global hair care market leader, Beauty Care at Dow Corning. “They also clearly underscore our materials technology expertise and our commitment to the growth of the hair care industry worldwide.”
Dow Corning’s new Hair Shine program addresses two major macro trends: consumers’ desire to reverse the effects of ageing and their preference for a healthy look and feel. Older consumers, whose hair may appear dull or grey with age, seek products that can enhance lustre and protect against the effects of colouring. Likewise, the current emphasis on healthy living and vitality – even into old age – is reflected in the demand for products that promote shiny hair, which is associated with overall health and wellness. Dow Corning specialty silicones, offered through its new Hair Shine program, intensify the luster of many hair types and help deliver heat and colour protection, enhanced hair strength, improved feel and frizz control.
When Dow Corning’s range of specialty silicones for age-defying hair shine are combined with Dow Corning 5200 Formulation Aid, it is possible to prepare water-in-oil formulations that deliver greater shine and luster than anhydrous serums at the same or lower nonvolatile content.
Thus, it minimses the need for volatile organic carriers. Dow Corning 5200 Formulation Aid is a liquid alkylmethyl silicone polyether copolymer used for making water-in-oil emulsions that provide excellent stability, flexibility, aesthetics and the ability to incorporate high water content.
Another noteworthy product, Dow Corning 2-2078 Fluid, is a liquid amino phenyl silicone resin for water-based and anhydrous formulations that provides long-lasting shine in leave-in and styling products, such as sprays, relaxers and conditioners.
Dow Corning’s new Hair Repair program addresses consumer demand for products that repair colored, aging and heat-damaged hair, or that protect hair from further damage and colour loss. Hair repair is a concern for many consumers seeking to express individuality and enjoy a positive sensory experience. Dow Corning hair repair silicones are proven to enhance the sensory feel of hair, particularly the sensation of moisturising, which is one of the most popular attributes of today’s premium conditioners and shampoos. These materials also provide a smooth, supple feel without weighing hair down, resist breakage and improve ease of combing and manageability.
Dow Corning CE-8411 Smooth Plus Emulsion, one of several performance-rich products within the Hair Repair program, is a nonionic silicone emulsion for luxury rinse-off shampoos and conditioners that provides a moisturizing feel and conditioning benefits while enhancing shine and protection against colour fading. Another important product in the portfolio is Dow Corning HMW 2220 Non-Ionic Emulsion. This material allows incorporation of extremely high-viscosity polymer into water-based formulations, such as shampoos, rinse-off and leave-in conditioners and styling products for smoothness, ease of combing and hair alignment.
