The Taiwan government plans to switch 180,000 street lamps in four special municipalities to LED, and so far Taiwan-based LED packaging house Everlight Electronics has obtained contracts for a total of 55,000 units from various municipal governments.
Taiwan's Bureau of Energy has set a budget of NT$2 billion (US$68 million) for five special municipalities and 11 counties to switch a total of 250,000 street lamps to LED.
Leotek, Delta Electronics and Leadray Energy obtained the street lamp projects for Tainan City. As for New Taipei City's street lamp projects, Leotek, Everlight, and Leadray Energy each obtained a contract for a total around 10,000 street lamps. Genius Electronic Optical obtained a contract from the government of New Taipei City to switch 9,700 street lamps.
Industry sources noted that so far Everlight has obtained contracts for a total of 55,000 street lamps while Delta and Leotek each obtained contracts for a total of 40,000 street lamps from local governments.
There are still several government projects with close to 50,000 street lamps yet to be announced and industry sources expect that 90% of the projects will be announced before the Lunar New Year.
