BAA is rolling out a network to support airport systems at the newly built Terminal 2, which is due to open in 2014.
The company has signed a contract, worth about £20m, with Fujitsu for network integration services.
Fujitsu will put in and support a network that will be used by a plethora of activities ranging from check-in and security to air-conditioning and retail.
In total, 40 airport systems in the terminal will be supported by the local area network (LAN).
The Terminal 2 project is part of a five-year £4.8bn transformation of Heathrow Airport which began in 2008.
Systems that will be supported by the LAN include:
- Voice–IP telephony and analogue telephony;
- Wireless LAN;
- IPTV;
- Security systems;
- Airport operations systems and management;
- Check-in;
- Baggage reconciliation system;
- Building control and management systems;
- Retail concessions.
Peter Kent, head of ICS at Terminal 2 for BAA, said the company wanted a supplier with experience in delivering critical national infrastructure projects and working with a large number of partners.
The network will be designed, tested, commissioned and implemented over the next three years, and will be integrated with the wider Heathrow Airport network.
The project design phase is nearing completion, and testing and configuration services have started ahead of the planned installation into the terminal starting in November.
