As LED lighting application matures, HVLED technology developed by Taiwanese LED manufacturer Epistar is showing fruits of success. The smaller sized HVLED has better heat dissipation and advantageous over-drive capabilities that can lower driver IC costs. Epistar revealed it is using HVLED products in several projects, and shipments have increased by more than twofolds in 2013 compared to the same period in 2012.
Epistar has been actively setting up its strategy in the LED lighting market, and has released three secret weapons to grab market share, which includes the package free Embedded LED Chip (ELC), HVLED and creative Filament. Epistar is the first company to mass produce high voltage HVLED chips. The company has developed multi-unit, multijunction substrates, high voltage drivers with different array designs. By using leadframe designs, HVLED chips have excellent electrical characteristics, and diverse lighting applications and flexibility. HVLED’s is suitable for high voltage application market, due to its over-drive capacity and better heat dissipation capabilities that can reduce driver IC costs.
The HVLED has just been released, but the overall performance has been fairly good, especially in streetlight and tube applications, said Hsieh Ming-Hsun, VP, R&D, Epistar. Many projects are currently using HVLED products, and as lighting demands increase, Epistar HVLED products monthly shipments have doubled to triple in 2013 compared to 2012.
