Shaw's Supermarkets Has Introduced Several New Seafood Species

US-based Shaw's Supermarkets has introduced several new seafood species,including swordfish,to mark the one-year anniversary of its commitment to seafood sustainability.

The company noted that it is offering 18 products in its fresh case certified by the Marine Stewardship Council(MSC),the certification and eco-labeling program for sustainable seafood,or verified though the Gulf of Maine Research Institute(GMRI),a non-profit marine science center.

The new products include Fresh Swordfish Steaks,Fresh Perch Fillets,Fresh Cod Fillets,Fresh Sockeye Salmon Fillets,Frozen at Sea Haddock Fillets,and Frozen at Sea New England Style Haddock Fillets.

Shaw's Supermarkets said that since announcing the initiative in September 2011,it has continued to work closely with the MSC and GMRI,as well as North Coast Seafood-its single seafood supplier-to grow its sustainable seafood sourcing program.

Shaw's president Mike Stigers said this month,the company is celebrating the continued success and expansion of its sustainable seafood program.

"Not only is it crucial to source seafood from fisheries committed to sustaining the health of the seafood supply,but it also provides our customers with the knowledge they are helping to further seafood sustainability as well,"Stigers added.

Shaw's,Osco and Star Market are part of the nationwide Supervalu family of grocery stores.Throughout five New England states,Shaw's has 169 store locations employing approximately 21,000 associates.
