Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on the government to establish an ad hoc committee in a bid to control the mislabeling of meat products in South Africa.
DA MP Annette Steyn said it will request that the ad hoc committee institute a Parliamentary Inquiry on the meat label scandal and subpoena all the retailers, abattoirs and other agencies implicated in the University of Stellenbosch study.
The inquiry will allow Parliament to investigate the entire supply-chain for meat products in South Africa.
The inquiry will also assess where oversight and accountability is lacking and could also help define the scope and mandate of the interventions required by the Single Food Agency proposed in Parliament earlier in 2013.
