Carrefour Invests CNY5m ($0.79m) to Build a New Food Safety Testing Center In Shanghai

French Supermarket retailer Carrefour has invested CNY5m ($0.79m) to build a new food safety testing center in Shanghai, China.

The decision was taken in response to the Chinese government's call for ensuring food safety, reported Chinacsr.com.

The new testing laboratory covers an area of about 200m2 and it features various instruments such as gas chromatograph, liquid chromatography and atomic absorption equipment. These instruments will be used to test nearly 50 characteristics for food in 65 categories.

The testing processes and results will be displayed on the TV screens in the sales area to popularize food safety knowledge to consumers. The retailer will also implement cooperation with Shanghai Food and Drug Administrative Institute, Shanghai Institute for Food and Drug Control and Shanghai Ocean University.
