Photonstar Receives DECC Grant

The PhotonStar LED Group has received a grant from the Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to develop a wireless smart lamp for the UK consumer market.

DECC's Energy Entrepreneurs Fund grant totaling 372,269 will be used to develop PhotonStar's wireless ChromaWhite circadian retrofit LED lamp. The grant is part of a 16 million funding pot awarded to entrepreneurs to help bring innovative low carbon products to market.

PhotonStar's LED smart lamp has ChromaWhite technology which for the first time uses wireless colour tuning. The lamp can be wirelessly programmed via a smart device such as an iPad to enable the user to change the lamp's colour temperature from 2200K to 6500K. The company said the spectral distribution of the light can also be adjusted to stimulate the circadian rhythm in the same way daylight would.

Wireless technology enables users to turn the lamp on or off remotely. The company displayed its first ChromaWhite smart lamp prototype at London's Ecobuild exhibition in March.

The government grant will be paid to PhotonStar in instalments on completion of certain milestones this financial year.

James Mckenzie, CEO of PhotonStar said: "This grant is a great endorsement of our energy-efficient ChromaWhite technology and will enable us to accelerate the development of our exciting product range. We are already making good progress with Chromawhite and are on track to have both new installation and retrofit products available for the market in 2014."
