Officials reopened a section of the New York State Thruway early Jan. 8 after closing it two days before because of snow and extreme cold.

The section between West Seneca and the Pennsylvania line in the Western part of the state opened around 5 a.m., the Buffalo News reported. State routes 400 and 219, which also had been closed, reopened as well.

Route 5 in Lackawanna remained closed because of flooding, the Buffalo News said. Interstate 81 between exits 34 and 48 in central New York also remained closed, Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said in a statement.

Temperatures started to increase Jan. 8 across most of the area affected by the cold snap, which hit the Eastern two-thirds of the United States, Bloomberg News reported. Weather forecasters predicted that temperatures would continue to slowly rise.
