Lighting Reports That an Overnight Switch to LEDs Could Save The Us $37 Billion in Annual

A report by the US Department of Energy entitled ‘Adoption of light-emitting diodes in common lighting applications’ published in April has discovered that LEDs could save the US $37 billion in energy costs.

Lighting reports that an overnight switch to LEDs could save the US $37 billion in annual energy costs. The report states that 49 million LED lamps and luminaires were installed in nine lighting applications in 2012, saving $675 million in energy costs across these markets that year.

It reveals that if the US began using 100% LEDs overnight, as much as half the country’s total lighting energy consumption in 2012 could have been saved. Lighting states that this equates to annual sourced energy savings of 3,873 trillion British thermal units.

A spokesperson from Lights 4 Living said:

"LEDs are being gradually introduced by many countries, but the figures surrounding 100% and overnight switchover reveal some outstanding energy and cost savings. While Britain is beginning to introduce more widely distributed LED public lighting, we can also help by switching to LEDs with our home lighting. Not only do they last for several years at a time but can dramatically reduced energy costs."
