Coop, a Sweden-based retail chain, has selected paperboard material Invercote Bio for its own-brand frozen berries.
Manufactured by the European Iggesund Paperboard, Invercote Bio is a virgin-fiber-based board coated with bioplastic that is said to make the packaging compostable.
The packaging, which is better for the environment, costs more as bioplastic contains more advanced properties as compared to traditional PE coatings.
Coop sustainability manager Louise Konig said, "This decision was totally in line with our sustainability policy and is actually not that unusual because we incorporate sustainability thinking into all our business deliberations."
The berry package has been developed by the Swedish printing services provider Trosa Tryckeri in collaboration with the berry supplier Olle Svenssons Partiaffar.
