Bangladeshi NGO Visited The North-East Indian State of Manipur to Survey The Textiles

Representatives of a Bangladeshi NGO visited the north-east Indian state of Manipur to survey the prospects of importing the state's textiles.

The visit of the six-member team of Friends in Village Development Bangladesh (FIVDB) was organized through efforts of Imphal-based Sahitya Thoupang Lup and Manipur Apex Handloom Weavers and Handicrafts Artisans' Cooperative Society Limited.

The delegation that visited several handloom clusters and tourist destinations like Loktak in Manipur under the 'Ethnic Manipuri Textile Project' programme also had two Manipuris, including a consultant and a beneficiary of the NGO, as team-members.

Traditional Manipuri textile goods are widely in demand in Bangladeshi market, the delegation said, and added that they have already linked up with Manipuris residing in Bangladesh, who have long-established trade links for Manipur's textile items.

The objective of the study tour was to gain knowledge and information regarding technology used by the state's weavers for preparing textile items and to spot the difference between the products produced in Bangladesh and in Manipur, the delegation said.

At the end of their visit, the delegation said the quality, finish and raw inputs used in Manipuri textile items were better than those manufactured in Bangladesh. Moreover, there was more diversity in Manipuri items, the team added.
