Trade Resources Industry Views Harvey Norman Win Gold Award for Being Californian-Based AV Cables' Best Retailer Supplier

Harvey Norman Win Gold Award for Being Californian-Based AV Cables' Best Retailer Supplier

The event, which drew a large crowd and included a performance by Grammy-winning artist Alicia Keys, saw Harvey Norman win the gold award for being the Californian-based AV cables' company best retailer supplier in 2012.

The awards were presented by Monster CEO Noel Lee, and indicate the retailer's success in selling the company's international range of highly-priced AV cables. Monster competes against abundant supplies of cheaper AV and HDMI cables, especially those sourced in Asia.

Awards this year at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas haven't been without controversy.

Online media reviewer CNET.com, which dishes out a huge array of tech awards, had sought to present one to Ergen's Dish for its Kangaroo-themed digital video recorder (DVR) with Sling. Known at the Hopper, the unit features a fast 1305 megahertz Broadcom processor and, importantly, an ability to skip ads.

However awarding a company for developing a device that undermines the business revenue model of its parent, US broadcaster CBS, didn't prove a street-smart move by CNET.

CBS quickly forced its online arm to disqualify Dish's DVR due to litigation over the ad-skipping feature, but by then the cat was out of the bag, with the disqualification causing a wave of disquiet at CES.

The news was front page in the CES's glossy Daily Magazine printed throughout the show.

“We will no longer be reviewing products manufactured by companies with which we are in litigation with respect to such product,” CNET.com said in a statement on its website.

Dish's CEO Joe Clayton replied: “We are saddened that CNET's staff is being denied its editorial independence because of CBS's heavy-handed tactics. This action has nothing to do with the merits of our new product that CBS, which owns CNET.com would censor that message is insulting to consumers.”
