The Portuguese wood-based panels company Sonae Industria has revealed that it is exploring the options for its Knowsley particleboard mill near Liverpool, which does business as Sonae UK. The firm will soon enter into consultations with worker representatives and trade unions. In the first phase, employees are to appoint a workforce committee that will join trade unions at the negotiating table. These consultations must be wrapped up within 90 days and hence by the end of October. The Knowsley complex presently employs around 220 workers. Sonae UK believes that another 500 or so people are indirectly employed by the site. Sonae Industria has yet to comment on whether the consultations will lead to the closure of the Knowsley mill, which started operating in 2000 and has a designed annual capacity of about 500, 000 m³.
