Reusable shopping and restaurant bags manufacturer Command Packaging has announced the opening the new agricultural plastic recycling facility Encore Recycling in Salinas, California, US.
Expected to commence operations in October 2013, the 130,000ft2 facility is said to recycle more than 100 million pounds of plastic a year.
Command Packaging and Encore Recycling CEO Pete Grande said implementing a sustainable recycling model that works for the consumer, the grocery store, and the environment, is a win-win for all.
"People love plastic. It's part of our everyday lives. Instead of trying to eliminate it, we need to create a "Smarter" plastic and Encore is doing that," Grande added.
Encore Recycling's closed-loop recycling system, which diverts discarded plastic away from landfills, will work with growers to collect, wash, and recycle the agricultural plastic.
The plastic that is being disposed of in California landfills, will be converted into reusable bags, 'smarterbags' for the grocery market.
