According to the data released by the Japan Ship Exporters' Association (JSEA), Japanese new ship export orders in January this year decreased 19.6 percent compared to the previous month of December, and were down 18.85 percent year on year, both on tonnage basis, to 10 ships totaling 527,525 gross tons, consisting of one general cargo ship, two ore carriers and seven bulk carriers.
Japanese shipbuilders' total ship export orders booked in 2012 totaled 177 ships, consisting of nine general cargo ships, 21 tankers and 147 bulk carriers, with a total gross tonnage of 8.1 million, falling by 9.3 percent year on year.
Meanwhile, in the first month of 2013, Japan delivered 41 ships totaling 1.9 million gross tons for export, increasing from 13 ships totaling 637,963 gross tons recorded in December last year. In 2012, Japan delivered 337 ships for export, totaling 15 million gross tons, down 8.5 percent compared to 2011.
