Portugal and Italy Can Hardly Be Offset by Temporary Shutdowns or Efforts to Export More

More particleboard and MDF/HDF mills in Spain, Portugal and Italy look set to shut for a long period of time or for good before the year's end due to ongoing weak demand in domestic markets that can hardly be offset by temporary shutdowns or efforts to export more. Several companies have announced decisions to close their plants in the past few weeks and have now already entered talks with worker representatives. In Spain, Finsa intends to cease particleboard production at Inama at the end of this year. Finsa's subsidiary Utisa will focus on making raw and laminated particleboard at its Cella I facility after ending MDF production. Finsa had previously idled several facilities, at least temporarily, during 2009. Interbon has now announced plans to alternate production at two particleboard mills at its main complex in Burgos.
