Australians Based Overseas Are Lured Home as Demand for Digital Continues to Grow

Australians based overseas are being lured home as the demand for digital resources continues to grow, according to a hiring expert.

Salaries for digital skills are now higher in Australia than in overseas markets such as the United Kingdom making home a more attractive option.

Michael Page Technology director Emily Wilson said chief digital officers could command between $230,000 and $280,000 in Australia.

"Demand is high for experienced skill sets that Australia doesn’t really have," she said. "We have had most of our success with Australian candidates in the UK and the United States returning home."

Ms Wilson said senior or front-end, mid-level digital roles were most in demand.

"A lot of work in digital at the moment is around creating one platform to push content rather than having a digital team for every website that is run within an organisation," she said.

Ms Wilson said digital roles were particularly popular in the retail and media sectors.

"There is more demand in Sydney for digital roles right now, but there is certainly more supply in Melbourne."

She said there was also a trend for organisations to hire their own development teams for digital online work.

"It is interesting that from a technology perspective most of the digital web development is kept in-house and localised, whereas, a lot of other development for clients is being off-shored."

Ms Wilson said digital roles were mostly offered as either permanent or fixed-term contract.

Michael Page has also reported a 10 per cent increase in IT contracts renewed from 2012 to 2013.

Contracting roles were strongest in the IT, professional services and government sectors, Ms Wilson said.

"In general, there is a lot of project management and applications development for contracting."

The recruiter found technology hiring in Brisbane finished 35 per cent up on 2011’s year-end result.

It also saw a 20 per cent lift in demand for fixed-term contracts.
