Cadillac ELR Is Builded at Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Plant by General Motors

US based automotive company General Motors is planning to build its Cadillac ELR plug-in electric luxury coupe at Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant in US, starting late 2013.

The Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plant, which also builds the Chevrolet Volt, will receive a $35m investment to build the new Cadillac ELR, which brings the total product investment to $561m since December 2009.

GM's Cadillac ELR, the production version of Cadillac's Converj, is the first two-door car to be built at Detroit-Hamtramck since the 1999 Cadillac Eldorado .

The ELR will come with an electric propulsion system made up of a T-shaped lithium-ion battery, an electric drive unit and a four-cylinder engine-generator.

Cadillac ELR will use electricity as its primary power source and switches to a gasoline-powered electric generator in case of low battery situation.

In addition, Cadillac is also planning to introduce 10 new products or major upgrades in the following three years, including the all-new XTS and ATS sedans.
