GLENN Archer has been appointed chief information officer for the Australian government, replacing Ann Steward who announced her retirement last month.
The Australian Government Information Management Office (AGIMO) also announced that first assistant secretary John Sheridan would be promoted to chief technology officer, a newly created role.
Archer was previously deputy to Steward, who held the CIO position for seven years.
His task now involves overseeing IT governance and policy for the whole of government, while Sheridan will be concerned with delivering whole-of-government objectives for networks, online services, and procurement.
AGIMO will be embedded into a core groups within the finance department.
The changes, which come into effect in February, are in line with recommendations from former departmental secretary Helen Williams.
