Even by early December, no agreement had been reached in the majority of negotiations between Japanese importers and European exporters on softwood lumber contracts for delivery in the first quarter of 2012. In the case of standard assortments, importers are pressing for cuts of 0/m³ and more on the existing price level. European exporters, on the other hand, are calling for mark-ups of a similar scale, arguing that their high and partly increasing log procurement costs do not permit any further reduction on prices.
