Ford Targets The Production of Ecoboost-Powered Cars in Europe at The End of 2015

US carmaker Ford's European subsidiary Ford of Europe is planning to more than triple its production of EcoBoost petrol engine powered cars to about 480,000 by 2015 per year from 141,000 in 2011.

The company's plans follow the beginning of the production of EcoBoost engines at its new plant in Craiova, Romania.

According to Ford, of the total cars manufactured during the period, about 300,000 models will be powered by new 1.0-litre variant of the EcoBoost engine.

Ford's EcoBoost engine family incorporates turbocharging, direct fuel injection and variable valve timing, which will collectively result in delivering the power of a larger engine with fuel efficiency of a smaller unit.

The company is also planning to produce 800,000 vehicles powered by the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine for Europe between 2012-2015 in Romania and Cologne, Germany, of which about 1.3 million engines of all displacements will be produced for European cars.

Ford is expecting that its vehicles offered with EcoBoost engines will double to 10 from five by 2015.

It is also planning to manufacture a further 800,000 EcoBoost engines for the abroad markets during the period, up from 90,000 in 2011.

The carmaker has started the production of 1.0-litre variant of EcoBoost engine at its Cologne engine plant in November 2011, while the 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre EcoBoost engines are produced at Brigend facility in Wales and Valencia, Spain respectively.
