Port Hedland in the iron ore-rich Pilbara region in Western Australia was shut down on January 22, due to tropical cyclone Peta which is expected to make landfall on Wednesday, January 23, slowing down iron ore shipments to the Far East.
Port Hedland Port Authority has stated that the port used by major Australian miners BHP Billiton, Fortescue and Atlas Iron will open on Wednesday, while the other iron ore ports Cape Lambert and Dampier used by Rio Tinto will resume operations on Thursday, January 24.
As SteelOrbis previously reported, earlier this month cyclone Narelle caused the shutdown of iron ore ports in the Pilbara region, hampering the one fifth of the global iron ore trade.
