Taiwan-based LED epitaxial wafer and chip maker and LED packaging service provider Lextar Electronics filed applications for 208 patents with the Intellectual Property Office under the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2013, the highest number for the third consecutive year among Taiwan-based LED makers, according to the company.
Of the patents, 177 or 85.1% were for inventions, Lextar indicated. The patents under application cover design, manufacturing processes and control systems for LED epitaxial wafers and chips, as well as LED packaging methods for use in backlighting, Lextar pointed out. These patents include COB (chip on board) products, high-efficiency LED light tubes, LED lighting panels with double lighting sides, high-voltage blue LED packaging, and flip chip technology, Lextar noted.
In addition to Taiwan patents, Lextar has applied for and obtained 1,700 patents in other countries, the company noted.
