Traditional lighting fixtures usually work in one of two directions: they send bright light straight down from above you, or straight up toward the ceiling from inside a lamp. I know, there are lamps that can be twisted to point at the wall, etc, but basically if you’re using a traditional lighting fixture, the actual light is blasting straight out from the bulb.
While a solid beam of light is great when using a flashlight to navigate through a cave, it’s not the best way to illuminate your work or living space. Our eyes appreciate ambient light, which is why passive solar is such a great way to light up a room. But what about when the sun isn’t shining? A new Kickstarter project aims to provide the all-encompassing quality of natural light in the form of an energy-efficient LED lamp.
Now, we’ve featured lots of LED lamps and bulb designs in the past. What makes the Ambient one different is that it uses not one, but sixteen outwardly facing high brightness LEDs to create an omnidirectional output that’s capable of filling living and work spaces with warm, inviting light.
The lamp’s design includes a full range sliding dimmer and custom heatsink attachment, allows for consistent heat removal, ensuring optimal operating temperature and longevity.
The AmbientOne is the first product to be designed and produced by Highlight Design, a small studio based in Omaha, Nebraska. ”We started with lighting design because it’s a great challenge,” writes founder Alex Bodell. “Our goal was to create a lamp that could seamlessly fit into a wide range of contemporary settings and produce clean and inviting light.” The company is now seeking Kickstarter funding to produce 100 AmbientOne lamps in two finishes. Although the idea is awesome, the $495 price tag might be a little prohibitive for some.
