Xylans and mannans, the plant cell wall polysaccharides, can be used to replace starch in biodegradable food packaging, according to a new Finnish study.
According to study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of Helsinki,xylan-and mannan-based films have great potential in packaging as they are plant derived and biodegradable besides being easily obtainable, reported Foodproductiondaily.com.
These polysaccharides are safe for food applications and they have potential as oxygen and grease barriers, the researchers noted.
The study revealed that several patents, which involve the use of xylans and mannans in packaging, have already been filed.
Xylans and mannans are biosynthesized by trees and plants.Common sources include grasses, cereals, sugar cane, cereal husks, and pulp side-streamed from hardwoods.
Starch, which is another water-soluble polysaccharide,is currently used in commercial packaging.
