India Plans to Invest Inr930m ($16.79m)to Boost Milk Production in The State of Punjab

India plans to invest INR930m ($16.79m) during 2012-13 to boost milk production in the state of Punjab, according to Dairy Development Minister Gulzar Singh Ranike.

As a part of the project, the Punjab government will implement subsidies on various schemes for dairy farmers; implement subsidies on milking machines; increase the area under cultivation of green fodder; and modernize semen banks.

In addition, the project will also improve the breeds of milk cattle by importing foetus from US under the Foetus Exchange Programme, reported the PTI.

Ranike said that Punjab has a state-of-the-art laboratory for foetus exchange, which can help in improving cow breeds in the future.

The government has already purchased foreign semen from the US and Canada to improve cow breeds in the state.
