Canton, Ohio-based special bar quality (SBQ) steel producer Republic Steel said late Monday that it experienced a failure at the transformer that supplies power to the #7 Furnace in the Canton, Ohio melt shop on Friday, August 2, 2013.
This failure is being investigated and will result in an outage of the #7 back-up furnace lasting between two and eight weeks. As a result, Republic is ramping up production at the #9 Electric Furnace.
Jaime Vigil, Republic President and CEO, said the company is taking the necessary steps to minimize customer impact.
