Coca-Cola and its Mexican bottlers Arca Continental, Embotelladora Bepensa, Yoli Acapulco, Corporacion del Fuerte, Corporacion Rica, Embotelladora del Nayar and Embotelladora de Colima have agreed to invest $34m to double the capacity of PetStar's PET recycling facility in Toluca in Mexico City.

PetStar is part of recycling services company Avangard Innovative. The expansion is expected to allow PetStar to recycle around 120 million pounds of PET per year, reported Plastics News.com.

PetStar chairman Miguel ángel Rabago told the website that the expansion will help create 500 direct and 6,000 indirect jobs.

The company will purchase additional equipment from Amut of Novara, Italy and Swiss company Buhler.

Coca-Cola Mexico president Brian Smith told the website that the expansion will make PetStar the largest food-grade PET recycling project in Latin America.
