iPhone and iPad users, prepare to wave goodbye to the classic Videos app on your iOS devices, because Apple is fixing to kill it.
Released to registered devs on Monday, iOS 10.2 (beta version 3) features both the Videos and the exciting new TV app revealed at the recent Mac event.
While this doesn’t confirm the death of Videos, one wonders what the point of having both would be considering TV builds in all of the functionality iOS users have become accustomed to.
According to 9to5Mac, the Videos app will be hidden by default in forthcoming versions of iOS 10, but still available to download.
Following the October launch Apple described the TV app as a “unified experience for discovering and accessing TV shows and movies from multiple apps on Apple TV, iPhone and iPad.”
It will sync users' purchases, integrate content from on-demand apps and save viewing progress across devices. Apple TV owners will also be able to use Siri to tune into live TV through compatible apps.
There’s also an awesome 'Up Next' screen which will display the next episode for every show the user is currently watching, whether it’s the an on-demand platform or through a TV channel’s app.
The TV app will also integrate the iTunes Store, enabling users to rent or buy new content.
The app will also work with the single sign-in feature that will enable Apple TV owners to log into all on-demand apps using their cable provider’s details.
Unfortunately, the TV app will be limited to the United States at launch so Brits will continue to have access to the Videos app for the foreseeable future.
The latest version of iOS 10.2 will likely roll out to public beta testers in the next few days before a full release shortly thereafter.
