It has been reported that the Paris Metro will become the first transport network to use LED 100% in all of its stations. A 4 year, 11 million Euro deal has been published that will see 250,000 lights replaced at 302 metro and 66 suburban stations. The operators are currently working towards cutting energy consumption of the whole network by 15%, and changing the lighting will contribute significantly to this, with energy needed to light up the stations set to reduce by over 50%.

The London Underground, Sydney CityRail and Brussels Metro are keeping an eye on the project and looking likely to follow.  Paris Metro operators RATP are expecting a fivefold decrease in the amount of maintenance and improved light quality in their stations. The old fluorescent tubes and lighting fixtures will be replaced by LED tubes like these.

Surveys amongst passengers reveal 92% saw no difference at all walking through an LED station and operators have been very particular about the quality of fixtures selected to ensure the project is a success.
