The International Sleep Products Assn. will update the industry on recent mattress recycling developments at a meeting here Tuesday, July 30.
The session is set for 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the World Center Forum, on the 16th floor of Building B. ISPA officials will discuss recent and pending state legislation that will change how used mattresses are recycled.
ISPA President Ryan Trainer will discuss how new laws recently enacted in Connecticut and Rhode Island will affect retailers, manufacturers, consumers and others that handle discarded mattresses.
"The mattress industry has grappled with the challenge of efficiently recycling a used mattress for over 20 years," Trainer said. "The new state recycling laws will help fund a process that will put into practice what we have learned through this work. Strong grassroots support from the industry - through calls and letters to elected officials - has been critical to ISPA's push to enact practical common sense laws. Our next challenge will be working with retailers, recyclers, government officials and the industry to implement the legislation that now has been signed into law."
Shelly Sullivan, a spokesperson for Californians for Mattress Recycling, will update attendees about the progress of mattress recycling legislation in California. An industry-supported bill has passed the California Senate, and will be considered by the Assembly in August. Continuing member support and contacts with key state legislators in California will be important in this last phase of the legislative process, ISPA said.
"This is a must-attend session for manufacturers and retailers that are involved with or concerned about recycling, especially for those companies doing business in Connecticut, Rhode Island and California," added Trainer.
