Consumer products manufacturing company Unilever is all set to develop pyrolysis technology to make it capable to recover fuel from the laminate sachet packaging which is being used for an increasing number of products.

Infrastructure for recycling or disposal is often limited in the developing markets where sachets are popular. Two factors affect the environmental impacts reduction created by post-consumer sachets and flexible packaging.
Initially, the format does not have enough economic value to allow for collection and recycling and secondly, waste management infrastructure in developing and emerging countries is poor or inadequate.
Unilever has set itself the goal of developing and implementing a sustainable business model for handling its sachet waste streams by 2015, in order to handle the problem.
Pyrolysis technology turns sachet laminate into fuel oil and will recover up to 60% of the embedded energy.
