India Would Be Importing About 4,000 Tons of Silk Fabrics From China to Meet Shortfall

India would be importing about 4,000 tons of silk fabrics from China to meet the demand shortfall, Silk Mark Organization of India (SMOI) Chief Executive Officer, Mr. KS Menon, has said.   He said India's annual silk output rests at around 21,500 tons, which is considerably below the demand of 30,000 tons of silk. This necessitates the country to import 5,000 tons of raw silk and another 4,000 tons of silk fabrics from China.   Inaugurating the six-day Silk Mark Expo in Coimbatore, Mr. Menon said the SMOI generated a business turnover of Rs. 1.3 billion through various exhibitions held during the last three years.   He also informed that India each year exports silk items like sarees worth around Rs. 30 billion to the EU, US and West Asian nations.   Sharing his views on silk adulteration, Mr. Menon said such practices cannot be curbed only by framing legislations, as it is practically not possible to keep a watch on the activities of over 500,000 weavers functional in the handloom as well as the powerloom industries of the country.
