DOE Announced a Solid-State Lighting Funding Opportunity

Tags: led

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced a solid-state lighting (SSL) funding opportunity on September 26, 201, directed toward the existing DOE SSL R&D program area for Manufacturing Research and Development. Under this funding opportunity, DOE seeks applications for projects to advance research, development, and market adoption of SSL technology. The funding is, to establish the U.S. as a global manufacturing leader and to help create jobs here at home.

DOE is soliciting SSL manufacturing R&D projects that target significant cost reductions through improvements in manufacturing equipment, processes, or monitoring techniques. According to the DOE announcement, projects should address the technical challenges that must be overcome before SSL becomes competitive with existing lighting in terms of value. The DOE hopes to utilize the knowledge gained from these projects to accelerate the progress toward creating a U.S.-led market for high-efficiency light sources that save more energy, reduce costs, and have less environmental impact than conventional light sources.
