LED chip packaging company Unity Opto Technology expects to ship 10 million LED light bulbs and 100,000 LED street lamps in 2013, according to company chairman Wu Qing-hui.
Unity Opto shipped three million LED bulbs in the first half of 2013 and has obtained orders from new clients in Europe and the US with shipments to begin in the second half, Wu said.
Unity Opto has received orders for 50,000 LED street lamps from Spain and will ship another 50,000 through China-based partner Potevio Group, Wu indicated. In addition, Unity Opto has set up a joint venture with a member of the group specifically for marketing LED street lamps in the China market, Wu noted. Unity Opto has finished developing LED candle lamps, a new product, and will start production in the third quarter and expects to ship 2-3 million units in 2013, Wu pointed out.
For LED backlight units (BLUs), Unity Opto has cooperated with Taiwan-based light guide plate maker Global Lighting Technologies to develop direct-type LED BLUs for use in LCD TVs, with optical distance reduced from 25mm to 10mm and using only 18 LED chips, Wu indicated. Such cost-competitive LED BLUs will be in certification by potential clients in the third quarter and come into trial production in the fourth, Wu said. Unity Opto's LED BLU shipments to China-based LCD TV vendors will significantly increase in July through October, Wu said.
Unity Opto has also been developing LED lighting for automotive applications and is likely to obtain OEM orders from Europe-based automobile makers in 2013, Wu said.
Unity Opto aims to increase 2013 consolidated revenues by nearly 30% on year to NT$10 billion (US$333 million), with 100% growth in revenues from LED lighting and 20-30% growth in those from LED backlight, Wu indicated.
