The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has sought setting up of a specialized zone for the readymade garment (RMG) sector on the land sanctioned for extension of the project. The request was made by the representatives of the BGMEA, when they met the newly appointed chairman of the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), Rear Admiral Mohammed Nizam Uddin Ahmed, in his office, Bangladesh news agency BSS reported. In response, the CPA chairman expressed his desire to establish a special RMG zone on 100 acres of land, out of the 1,000 acres sanctioned by the Government for extension of the port.
In view of a spate of accidents that took place in the recent past in some Bangladesh garment factories, there is an increasing pressure from global buyers as well as foreign governments to improve work and safety conditions in apparel factories. Relocating garment manufacturing units to newly constructed specialized zones is among the measures that the Bangladesh Government proposes to improve the working conditions in the garment manufacturing sector.
