Mitsubishi Has Developed a Prototype EV Motor System with Silicon Carbide Inverter

Mitsubishi Electric has developed a prototype electric vehicle (EV) motor system with an incorporated silicon carbide inverter.

The company claims that the EV motor system is the smallest of its kind, measuring half the dimensions of the company's current motor system equipped with an external inverter.

Mitsubishi's new motor system is expected to enable manufacturers to develop EVs offering more passenger space and greater energy efficiency.

With the use of the company's high-level magnetic-design technology size and configuration of the stator and rotator poles were optimised which resulted in enhanced magnetic efficiency and 5% rise in its power output.

After finalising other technologies for motor/inverter cooling, downsizing and efficiency, the new system will be commercialized.

Mitsubishi said that the global demand for EVs and hybrid EVs (HEVs) has been growing which reflects increasing strict regulation of fuel efficiency and increased public interest in saving energy resources and cutting carbon dioxide emissions.
