The Local Glass Industry Booms with RM3bil Turnover for Glass Manufacturing and Processing

THE local glass industry is booming with RM3bil turnover for both glass manufacturing and processing streams of the industry, said Malaysia Glass Association (MGA) chairman Ho Sai Woo.

MGA was the local host for Glasstech Asia 2013, which was co-organised by the Singapore Glass Association (SGA) and Conference & Exhibition Management Services Pte Ltd (CEMS).

“Malaysia is an ideal host for the event given the significant role that the industry plays in the country’s economy. The downstream industry has created more than 10,000 jobs with an annual turnover of RM2bil, while the upstream hires about 1,200 workers with a turnover of RM400mil a year,” said Ho.

According to him, the industry has invested more than RM500mil in manufacturing facilities in the country.

Earlier, SGA chairman Gan Chee Siong said the future of the glass industry was bright and robust.

“The glass industry is expected to maintain a healthy growth rate, as developing countries continue to invest in the construction environment where demand is expected to breach the US$30bil mark.

“Robust demand from China and India spur this forward, with China consuming about 40% of the world’s glass production,” said Siong.

He was confident that the Glasstech Asia series was an excellent gateway for business matchmaking and exchanges between exhibitors and trade visitors.

The trade event played host to 184 exhibitors from 20 countries. The exhibition occupied some 8,000 sq m, in addition to the anticipated 4,500 trade professionals.

One of the key features of this year’s exhibition was the seven international pavilions from China, Germany, Italy, Singapore, Taiwan, India, Malaysia and the United Kingdom which covered five key building elements including aluminium facade, doors and windows, flat and float glass, glass accessories and hollow glass.

The art of technical processing has changed glass into something versatile that is now a vital element in interior design and one company, Redbiz Glass Design Sdn Bhd, prides itself as the art glass specialist and lifestyle trendsetter.

In fact, Redbiz designers are looking into material innovation, artistic designs, spatial planning, and colour combination and lighting effects to bring customers the latest lifestyle trends.

“Our designers are very artistic and creative and are ever ready to transform a piece of glass into a true reflection of your distinct style and taste,” said Redbiz Glass Design Sdn Bhd managing director Tommy Tan when met at the 11th Glasstech Asia exhibition, which was held from Nov 25 to 27, at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

According to Tan, Redbiz art glass is most suitable for windows, doors, ceilings, walls, hallways and screens but could be fitted for any purpose depending on customer requests.

“Having this piece of art is the trendiest expression in modern living, be it in a home, an apartment, a villa, office or hotel,” he said.

Redbiz Design, established in 2002, operates from its premises in Taman Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur.

Other products available from the company include 3D-etching, sandblasting, acid texture, resin glass, leaded stained glass, glass edging/bevelling, paper glass, SG effect, LamiArt glass, colour coating, embossed etching and tinted mirror.

One of the most popular glass art designs is 3D-etching, which is actually a process combining art and modern technology with floral, bird, hill, and stream designs in full 3D effect. The ambience will be enhanced further by special illumination effects.

“The colour-etching technique also produces beautiful results. This high-end decorative product is a result of the application of colours and advanced technologies. This form of art glass could brighten up the room and highlight any part of your house or office,” said Tan.

Amy Li from Bangmei Mirror Co. Ltd, Shandong, China, said one of the company’s best-sellers was the crystal glass mosaic, which is widely used in kitchen backsplash decoration and walls.

“We can also take orders for custom-made designs and our glass mosaic is impervious to liquids and vapours. The colours won’t fade, stained or get decolourised. They are simple to install using standard tools and are easy to clean,” said Li.

The manufacturer and exporter of glass products has been around for 16 years and has three advanced fully automated mirror lines. Bangmei produces items such as silvered mirrors, aluminium mirrors, safety mirrors, tinted mirrors, antique mirrors, float-painted glass, low-iron painted glass, tinted patterned glass, low-iron glass, decorative glass and glass blocks.

“Our excellent products and professional service have allowed us to have a good market worldwide,” said Li.

Eastech Digital Co. Ltd from Taiwan, which also participated in the event, has a unique new inkjet technology, that combines magical colours and ceramic colour printing.

“Eastech’s Magicolor provides an exceptional resolution print with UV performance and adhesion features.

“This colour requires no pre-treatment with sprays or sealers of the printed surface and because of this, it allows faster processing while keeping costs and time down for more efficient printing,” said Eastech menaging director Robert Pan, who has 30 years of experience in this line.

He said in the past designer’s ideas were limited but with new advanced technology provided by the Eastech Glass Digital Flatbed Inkjet printer, the vision of a designer could be turned into a stylish masterpiece.

Another exhibitor, Le-Gardien (LG) from Singapore, has been supplying glass products for architectural, industrial and decorative applications.

“We source our products from glass manufacturers in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, the Middle East and China. LG is also engaged in the primary processing of glass, cutting, grinding, drilling and edging.

“We also supply basic raw glass (float glass) and mirrors, processed glass, insulated glass, colour-clad glass, acid etched-dirt free patterned glass, float/annealed glass, laminated and sandblasted/frosted glass,” said Le-Gardien chief executive officer Leo Yeo.

Malaysian company, SecuGlass Sdn Bhd from Kepong, has developed a range of blast-resistant glass that it displayed at the exhibition

The special resin-laminated glass known as crime prevention glass, is also bullet, burglar and bomb resistant and absorbs a high level of sound and UV radiation, offering considerable protection against noise.

The glass has a minimum thickness of 5.5mm which could withstand multiple drops of a 4.1kg steel ball from a height of about 10m.

Other exhibitors that took part in Glasstech Asia 2013 were Foshan Aglasstec Co.
