US-based automaker Chrysler is planning to halt the production at its Mack Avenue Engine II plant in Detroit in September 2012.
Following the closure of the plant, the 3.7-litre V-6 engine which is currently used in the Jeep Liberty and Ram 1500 pickup will be replaced by the company's new Pentastar V-6 being manufactured in Trenton, Michigan and Saltillo facility in Mexico.
The 650,000ft2 Mack Avenue Engine II facility was built in 1999 and the first engine produced by this plant was unveiled in 2000.
Chrysler said that the move will not affect its Mack Avenue Engine I facility whic is adjacent to the facility being closed and will continue producing the company's 4.7-litre V8 engine.
The automaker also said that the all the 182 workers employed at the powertrain plant will be employed at another Chrysler Group facility.
