The Pakistani Government is actively considering imposing duty on yarn import from India, however, the final decision would be taken after consulting with all the stakeholders and keeping in view the national interests, said Minister of Textile Industry Abbas Khan Afridi during a recent meeting with members of the Faisalabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FCCI).
While addressing FCCI members the Minister said that it was necessary to take the country towards development and progress and Pakistan’s economical growth was directly linked to the growth of the textile industry, reports the Nation.
Mr. Afridi informed that though there was no possibility of clamping ban on import of yarn from India, the Government would be taking necessary steps to safeguard the national interest.
The Government has decided to take actions which would lead to betterment and welfare of the country, and resolving the problems faced by textile sector would also be given priority, especially the gas supply issue, he added.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PHMA) has requested the Government to facilitate duty-free yarn import from India in order to circumvent cartelization by the local spinning industry.
According to PHMA, the imposition of import duty on raw materials such as yarn from India will negatively impact the apparel export sector.
